Quick Ways to Eat on Holiday with your Children

When you’re holidaying with kids, a sizeable chunk of your traveling time will be consumed in dining. When you’re traveling as a couple or solo, meal times are flexible, and you might even skip a meal or subsist on fruit instead of a proper lunch in the whirl of sightseeing.

That’s simply not possible when you’re holidaying with kids. In fact, skipping proper filling meals is the best way to make your kids cranky, ultimately ruining your day. The problem with kids on holiday is that eating at a restaurant can be a long drawn out, stressful affair. Kids take long to decide what they want to eat, and you can be sure they won’t settle for whatever you order for them.

Avoid these interminable delays by eating at least one meal in your room. This will preferably be breakfast since you’ll only probably return to your hotel at night. If the choice of hotel food isn’t appetizing or seems expensive, pack some packets of granola, and dry milk. Add some fruits and local breads to the mix, and you have a healthy breakfast for the family!

If you have an attached kitchenette, having a full breakfast is not just inexpensive and time saving, but also a great family holiday experience to enjoy. Plus, you’ll be saved the hassle of shepherding a bunch of kids into a restaurant, and all the stress that that comes with.

You can do the same for dinner. If you can find cold cuts and greens, that’s all you need for a decent dinner. (Remember to pack knives, a cutting board and a couple of large bowls when you set off on your trip). Alternatively, you can even pack an entire picnic lunch basket using commonly available foods and local produce, and preservatives like jams and jellies that you’ve packed for the trip. The lesser you spend on food, the more money you have left over for souvenir shopping, or some terrific holiday experiences like an expensive day trip.

Many countries in the world are renowned for their cuisine, but chances are their food might not agree with your kids. French cuisine is a prime example. Try to get around these by looking for American style fast food restaurants (you’ll find a McDonald’s in just about every major city). Local ice creams and juices are always a safe bet. French dessert, Italian gelatos - introduce your kids to all these authentic sweet flavors to round off their trip.
